About my teaching practice
Lessons are available Monday to Wednesday, 1.30pm to 9.00pm and may be taken weekly, fortnightly, monthly or as required (subject to availability)
Intensive courses can be arranged.
Both Daytime and evening appointments are offered.
Tuition is offered on a one to one basis only.
Group tuition is not offered as I believe that it is of very limited value educationally.
All ages from children of primary school age (7) are catered for. I teach many adults, most from the starting point of absolute beginner. I have a good rapport with children and in particular have good communication with teenage students. Adult beginners are my speciality, and I am presently teaching many people who have taken up a musical instrument in their retirement. I have 40+ years experience of teaching in private practice, and am confident that I can help you achieve your goals in music.
You may read and download my very short and clearly worded terms and conditions and 'guide to your lessons' on the Further information/Documentation tab above.
For those students wishing to enter examinations, my results history is excellent at all grades.
Teaching is undertaken at my fully equipped home using professional instruments consisting of a fine new Yamaha Grand Piano, and a large selection of professional quality guitars and Fender amplification.
Please note that my own guitars are available for students to use at lessons only if they have need to do so and are not available for hire or loan. Using your own guitar at your lesson is always encouraged. Students of the trumpet should always use their own instruments and mouthpieces for hygiene reasons.
As an aid to teaching and for inspiring choice of music for pupils I have a vast reference library of music available. In addition to a comprehensive examination syllabus collection, this library consists of scores and volumes of classical, contemporary, jazz, standards, tutoring and practice manuals and many other volumes in all the disciplines taught. I also have a large range of historical and currently unavailable music scores to satisfy some of the more 'off the wall' student requests. Additionally I have a large amount of theoretical, biographical and musical history volumes for reference and enhancement of the lessons.
All styles are taught from classical to contemporary. Whatever your goal or ambition. each student is respectfully and carefully treated as an individual. Many grade 8 and higher diploma students have been taught by me, and several students have gone on to universities and colleges to study music, and several now enjoy professional careers. I particularly encourage adult beginners to fulfill their life ambition to play a musical instrument.
As a musician with a lifetime of professional performance experience, I use that experience to encourage performance inspired tuition in a comfortable environment. I frequently hold student concerts and musical evenings for those who wish to perform, but if your tuition is simply to amuse yourself at home then that too is warmly encouraged. In summary, my teaching style is always friendly, non-critical and encouraging.
If you are looking for lessons for a child, then I am very experienced in child tuition and proven to be child friendly. Parents are welcome to sit in on any lesson if they wish
As an independent teacher I rarely take time off. My teaching commitment is very important both to me and to my students, and only when circumstances of illness or personal needs arise will lessons be cancelled, and even then where possible moved to an alternative time. Lessons continue during school holidays by popular demand. I never have, and never will substitute a teacher in place of myself. The teacher you engaged is always what you get!
I maintain a practice always in excess of 60 registered students, and teach on average 50 students per week, many of whom have been attending for many years now. Lessons may be weekly, fortnightly or monthly or ad hoc to suit the individual tuition and budgetary needs.
Several students think it worthwhile to travel great distances for their lessons as they cannot find exactly what they are looking for closer to home. Students travel from as far away as Nottingham, Lincoln, Newmarket, Peterborough and Ely amongst many other places.
In summary, if you are looking for top quality, fully qualified professional tuition then please read the following pages for more detailed information on the options available.
